55TH SADC-PF PLENARY ASSEMBLY| Hon. Phillipus Katamelo, Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources presenting the report of the committee on "Promoting climate action in parliaments to strengthen food security and sustainable agriculture; enhance SRHR outcomes; and govern natural resources effectively".

Hon. Utaara Mootu seconding the Report of the Standing Committee on Democratisation, Governance and Human Rights on the theme “Enhancing the role of Parliament in mitigating electoral risks and building greater resilience into electoral processes in the SADC Region. In her Seconder’s Speech to adopt the report, Hon. Utaara Mootu who is part of the Committee stressed the importance of allocating resources for Election Observation Missions.

Hon. Phillipus Katamelo presented Namibia's country report at the 55th SADC-PF Plenary Assembly in Luanda, Angola on progress on implementation of the Resolutions of the 54th Plenary Assembly.

He reported that Namibia has made progress in areas such as women and youth representation in parliament. Other notable achievements highlighted are the passing of the Disaster Risk Management Act meant to reduce the effects of floods and drought that perennially plague the country and the Access to Information Bill aimed at easing access to information in order to empower communities with timely, adequate and accurate information and bridging the digital divide.

The new Education Act and Child Protection Act are also likely to improve the overall education sector and enhance teaching and learning outcomes and the protection of children from challenges such as child marriage, respectively. Hon. Katamelo stated that the ambitious green hydrogen project will fulfill Namibia’s aspirations of adopting renewable sources of energy to help de-carbonise and alleviate the energy crisis in the region and beyond.
He further implored SADC countries said to already benefit immensely from BRICS countries, to consider joining the bloc in order to amplify and provide more growth and expansion especilly, inlight of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The Namibian Parliament has also been raising awareness and advocacy on the universal access to SRHR and HIV and AIDS in collaboration with SADC-PF through its oversight activities.

Parliament of Namibia staff participated in the Africa Service Day Sport Tournament from 24 to 26 June 2024.

Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Prof. Peter Katjavivi today, registered as a voter at the MTC headquarters in Olympia. He was received by Electoral Commission of Namibia - ECN Chairperson, Dr. Elsie Nghikembua. Hon. Katjavivi implored all Namibians to register for the upcoming general elections in order to exercise their democratic right. The General Registration of Voters which started yesterday, will come to an end on the 1st of August 2024.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Economics and Public Administration today, began with its oversight visits to the Northern Communal Areas (NCAs). The oversight visits emanate from a petition received by the National Assembly in 2022, referred to the committee, which was lodged by a civic organization known as Lisha Empowerment and Development. The petition calls for the urgent revival of the market for livestock in the Northern Communal Areas (NCAs), further imploring parliament to intervene in what the group describes as “underdevelopment of the livestock market in the NCA’s to the point of market extinction”.

The committee is led by Hon. Natangwe Ithete with fellow MPs, Hons. Maria Elago, Gotthard Kasuto, Yvette Araes, Johanna Kandjimi, and Jennifer van den Heever.

Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Prof. Peter Katjavivi and his Turkish counterpart, H.E. Prof. Dr. Numan Kurtulmuş have reinforced the two countries long-standing bilateral relations by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The MOU, aimed at enhancing parliamentary cooperation between the two legislatures, was signed on Friday in Istanbul following Katjavivi’s official visit to Turkey at the invitation of Kurtulmuş.

The agreement, will among other issues cover joint meetings between the two legislatures’ standing committees and exchange visits by administrative staff for the purpose of exchange of experience and information on legislation and other parliamentary activities.
