Members of the South African Parliament in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), paid a courtesy call on the Chairperson of the National Council, Hon. Lukas Muha earlier today, 10 May 2022.
The Chairperson welcomed the visiting delegation heartily, noting that due to its representative role, a visit to the National Council equates a visit to all 14 regions of Namibia, as each region is well represented by three Members respectively.
Hon. Muha focused his remarks on the unity of SADC countries, calling on the regional economic community to meet more regularly in order to present itself as a united front at international forums. As a sign of displaying a united front, the Chairperson implored on countries from the same region and economic bloc to speak the same language on similar matters, something the Chairperson says can only be done if countries come together more regularly. The Chairperson’s message also touched on the shared history between Namibia and South Africa and the former’s contribution and support to the independence of Namibia. The remnants of this history, Hon. Muha says, is still evident today, particularly in areas of governance.
At the occasion, the Chairperson was presented with an emblem of the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa by the the leader of the delegation, Hon. Joel Seiso Mohai.
The NCOP Members are on a four-day study visit to the National Council. Since their arrival, they have held meetings with the Secretary and Senior Staff of the National Council as well as with the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Prof. Peter Katjavivi. The delegation is also expected to meet the Right Hon. Prime Minister, Hon. Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, Hon. McHenry Venaani in his capacity as Leader of the Official Opposition and with officials from the Khomas Regional Council.
Like in the National Council, Members of the NCOP are drawn directly from the nine (9) Provinces of South Africa, making the two Houses of Parliament equivalent. The 15-member strong delegation comprises Provincial Chief Whips, Party Whips and a House Chairperson on Committees and Oversight.
