Chairperson of the National Council, Hon. Lukas Sinimbo Muha, has called on the international community to reform the United Nations Security Council to ensure that it responds meaningfully to all threats to global peace and security.He particularly criticised the veto power held by the five permanent members of the Security Council calling it the veto power the “weakest link” to achieving global peace and security, emphasising that it is often wielded to protect national interests, rather than addressing the collective needs of the international community.
He made these remarks at the inaugural International Seminar on Parliamentary Diplomacy which took place in Havana, Cuba.Speaking at the event,
Hon. Muha He stressed that the growing trend of violent armed conflicts and the disregard for UN resolutions are signs that the world is sliding back into dangerous instability.Hon. Muha urged the international community to strengthen the UN system, particularly the Security Council, to ensure that it responds meaningfully to all threats to global peace and security.Hon. Muha also highlighted the impact of the economic blockade on Cuba, warning that it threatens not only the stability of the Cuban people but also the global economy.
He called on participants to reflect on how such actions affect international relations and global peace.The seminar, which has gathered representatives from over 20 countries, focuses on the role of parliamentary diplomacy in promoting international law, peace, and sustainable development. Discussions include topics such as democratising international relations, addressing climate change, ensuring food security, and protecting human rights.The event also explores the growing presence of women in parliamentary diplomacy and the critical role parliamentarians play in fostering global cooperation.
