The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Constitutional and Legal Affairs is on a weeklong benchmark visit to Denmark to engage with the Danish Parliament and key institutions to exchange ideas on access to justice, law reform, human rights protection, anti-corruption efforts, and the conduct of free and fair elections. The delegation will be in that country’s capital Copenhagen from 20-24 January 2024.
The team led by the committee chairperson Hon. Kletus Karondo met with the speaker of the Danish Parliament, Hon. Søren Gade, Madam Marie Hansen, Secretary General and senior officials from the International Relations Department of the Danish Parliament.During the meeting, Hon. Karondo said the visit was prompted by Denmark’s high ranking as one of the countries with the most effective legal systems in the world by the 2023 and 2024 World Justice Project Rule of Law
“According to the World Justice Project (WJP), effective rule of law reduces corruption, combats poverty and disease, and protects people from injustices large and small,” Karondo said.He added that, “effective rule of law underpins development, accountable government, and respect for fundamental rights, and it is the foundation for communities of justice, health, opportunity, and peace”.“It is one of the main reasons why we decided to visit Denmark,” the chairperson said.
With such a top ranking of Denmark in the rule of law, Hon. Karondo hopes the visit will shed light on how the country managed to reduce corruption, poverty, violation of human rights and a foundation for justice and peace in that country.Karondo stated that the committee aims to engage with the various Danish parliamentary committees and government institutions during the benchmark visit.
The committee will also meet with the Institute for Parties and Democracy (DIPD), Africa Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Danish Bar and Law Society and Danish Institute of Human Rights.
