COURTESY VISIT: SWEDISH PARLIAMENTARY DELEGATION

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Prof. Peter Katjavivi, received a courtesy visit from a delegation of the Swedish Parliament.
Prof. Katjavivi emphasized the strong and cordial relationship between the two countries across various sectors. He described the visit as an opportunity to engage, exchange perspectives, and acknowledge the historical support provided by Nordic countries during the liberation struggle, particularly in healthcare, education, and humanitarian aid. Furthermore, he reiterated the importance of strengthening ties between the two parliamentary institutions to enhance legislative systems and processes through collaboration.
The head of the Swedish delegation, Ms. Borians Åberg, highlighted the historical ties between Namibia and Sweden, underscoring that free and fair elections are fundamental to democracy. She noted the similarities in the democratic structures of both countries. She commended the gender diversity within the Namibian Parliament, as well as its commitment to improving the lives of its citizens.
Prof. Katjavivi also took the opportunity to bid farewell, reflecting on his experiences in the legislature, particularly his work with the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and efforts to promote world peace, including in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He reminisced about his role in fostering an inclusive society and highlighted the election of the Namibia’s first female President as a milestone in pursuing gender equality.
