Ya Toivo’s portrait displayed in Church during his memorial service
|Story by George Sanzila
Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Prof. Peter Katjavivi has described late struggle stalwart, Andimba Toivo ya Toivo as a man with humility whose commitment to freedom and social justice was unmatchable. Katjavivi said this during the memorial service of the late hero held at the St. George’s Anglican Cathedral in Windhoek on the 22nd of June 2017.
Katjavivi’s first encounter with Ya Toivo was when they met in London after the latter’s release from Robben Island prison in 1984. Katjavivi was based in London at the time as a Swapo Representative where he raised awareness on the plight of Namibian political prisoners held under the South African apartheid regime. Toivo endured 18 years of incarceration in the notorious Robben Island prison for his political activism along Nelson Mandela.
A national memorial service for ya Toivo will be held today (23/06/17) from 12h00 at the independence stadium in Windhoek.
The struggle stalwart who died on the 09th of June 2017 has been accorded national hero status and will be buried at the heroes’ acre on the 24th of June.
